The Columbus Fire Department partnered with researchers from Georgia Tech to develop a real-time “Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) Fire Digital Twin” — an AI-powered tool that predicted wildfire spread speed and direction to support emergency response and public preparedness. The project leveraged drone footage, helmet- and camera-mounted sensors, and deep-learning models to provide fire crews with advanced, localized fire forecasting.

Community engagement was central to the effort. Columbus’s existing Citizen Fire Academy was expanded to introduce residents to fire behavior, AI risk modeling, and household fire preparedness. Participants were trained as Community Fire Ambassadors and helped spread awareness in neighborhoods with high wildfire risk. As Muscogee County experienced continued housing development within Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) areas, particularly toward Spalding County, this work supported more informed and proactive community preparedness.

By integrating real-time data, machine learning, and community-driven education, the initiative strengthened local capacity to anticipate wildfire risks and protect vulnerable populations and infrastructure across the region.
