GA Working Farms Fund
Taking Action for Georgia's Local Food
The Conservation Fund: Georgia Working Farm Fund project seeks to address food insecurity as part of the Smart Community Corps Internship Program for summer of 2022!
One in eight U.S, residents will experience food insecurity this year. The Georgia Working Farms Fund is the first program in the U.S. to offer end-to-end food system support for next-generation farmers including a path to farm ownership and access to established markets to sell their products. As a result, this innovative program permanently protects threatened farmland, provides land access and business support to farmers, and grows a more resilient and diverse local food system.
Working with the Conservation Fund’s Krisztian Varsa and Stacy Funderburke, a Smart Community Corps intern will work with this innovative program to build a healthier, more equitable, and resilient food system around sustainable farm businesses. Utilizing a revolving fund model, the program will permanently protect significant farmland across metropolitan foodsheds and create opportunities for ambitious, diverse farmers to scale up sustainable local food production. Summer interns will provide research, data collection, outreach and program development guidance to extend capacity for metric-based reporting and increase access to technology for small to mid-size farms in the Working Farms Fund program.
